South African singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the itinerary of her upcoming A*POP World Tour, with the change publicised on Friday just days after a wave of Nigerian backlash erupted over her planned December 22 concert in the city.
As reported by PM News Nigeria, the criticism was driven largely by Tyla’s silence on the xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. Public figures including content creator Solomon Buchi and media personality Dotun led calls for a boycott, framing it as a symbolic protest against the violence. The campaign quickly went viral under the banner “South Africa Thinks We’re Fools,” drawing in celebrities, OAPs and thousands of Nigerian social media users who demanded the concert be cancelled and the Nigeria Immigration Service deny Tyla a visa.
Despite dropping Lagos, Tyla’s A*POP World Tour is still set to conclude with performances in Cape Town and Johannesburg in January.
Neither Tyla nor her management has issued an official statement explaining the removal of Lagos from the tour schedule or addressing the Nigerian boycott campaign directly. No replacement date or alternative Nigerian city has been announced.
The Grammy-winning singer had not publicly commented on the xenophobic attacks in South Africa prior to the schedule change.
