Nigeria and Canada are nearing a Bilateral Air Services Agreement to launch direct flights, with officials set to resume talks in August 2026.
Nigeria, Canada Move Toward Direct Flight Connectivity
Direct flights to Canada could soon be a reality. Per The Guardian, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo told Canada’s Chargé d’Affaires David Sproule that both countries are close to concluding a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).
Keyamo said thousands of Nigerians travel to Canada weekly but must transit through Europe or the US due to the lack of direct flights. He noted immigration and deportation matters fall outside his ministry’s mandate, requiring input from the Ministry of Interior.
Sproule said a Canadian delegation will visit Nigeria in early August to continue talks, stressing that Standard Operating Procedures for repatriating undocumented Nigerians must be finalised first. Both sides agreed to reconvene on August 6, 2026.
