Eight students of the Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade in Ogun State have been kidnapped after suspected abductors raided their residence in Ipara, Remo North Local Government Area on Wednesday night, prompting the school to cancel scheduled examinations and deploy multiple police tactical units to the area.
Students preparing for examinations went to bed on Wednesday night and woke up to a nightmare — eight of their colleagues were gone.
Suspected kidnappers stormed a student residence in Ipara, Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State at approximately 9 pm on Wednesday, abducting eight students of the Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade — popularly known as GAPOSA — in yet another brazen attack on Nigeria’s academic community.
A student who spoke to Tribune Online on condition of anonymity confirmed the abduction, saying eight students were taken from the residence during the attack. The school management responded by cancelling computer-based and written examinations scheduled for the following day.
A notice sighted by Tribune Online read: “Following the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday, today’s examination has been cancelled. However, tomorrow’s examination remains scheduled as planned. If there is any change regarding tomorrow’s exam, an official announcement will be communicated promptly. For now, all students are encouraged to remain calm, stay positive, and continue preparing for their examinations.”
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that reports of abduction had been received from the Ipara axis, though he stopped short of confirming the number of students taken. He disclosed that personnel from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Violent Crime Response Unit and other tactical teams had been immediately deployed to the area.
The polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer promised to respond to enquiries but had not issued an official statement as of the time of this report.
The abduction comes amid a wave of student kidnappings across Nigeria, with over 40 pupils and teachers from Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area still in captivity following their May 2026 abduction — a case that has already resulted in life sentences for three convicted accomplices.
The search for the eight GAPOSA students is ongoing.
