Burkina Faso’s media regulator fined French broadcaster Canal+ 200 million CFA francs for failing to provide free access to state TV channels.
Burkina Faso Fines Canal+ $350,000 Over State TV Access
Burkina Faso’s media watchdog has hit French broadcaster Canal+ with a second, steeper fine of 200 million CFA francs ($350,000), four times higher than the 50 million CFA franc penalty imposed in June. Vanguard reports, citing a statement seen by AFP, that the regulator accused Canal+ of failing to keep state broadcaster RTB’s channels available to subscribers even after their subscriptions expire, as required under a 2024 agreement.
CSC president Louis Modeste Ouedraogo said the company had not complied within the 30-day deadline set after the earlier sanction. Burkina Faso, ruled by Captain Ibrahim Traore since a 2022 coup, has also suspended several Western media outlets, including RFI and France 24.
