SOKAPU has alleged that Minister of Works David Umahi threatened its National President, Tabara Samuel Kato, over the group’s N20 billion lawsuit demanding an independent autopsy and investigation into the death of nurse Mary Habila.
The Southern Kaduna Peoples United Associations (SOKAPU) has alleged that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, threatened its National President, Engr. Tabara Samuel Kato, following the group’s lawsuit seeking an independent investigation into the controversial death of 26-year-old nurse Mary Habila.
Sahara Reporters reports that at an emergency press conference on Tuesday, SOKAPU claimed Umahi called Kato via WhatsApp at about 9:39 a.m. on July 28 after learning of the suit and a television interview Kato granted on Channels Television on Sunday.
According to Kato, the minister allegedly said: “I am David Umahi, the Honourable Minister of Works. I saw your suit against me, you need money right? I will teach you a lesson of your life such that you will learn never to mess with person like me. I will give you 10 lawsuits… I will deal with you!”
SOKAPU condemned the alleged remarks as intimidation aimed at discouraging the group’s legal action, insisting its suit was constitutionally protected and reiterating its demand for “a proper, independent autopsy to clear all doubts surrounding the circumstances of her death.”
The group called on President Tinubu, the National Assembly, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies to take note of the alleged threats.
The development comes days after SOKAPU filed a fundamental rights suit at the Kaduna State High Court against Umahi, the Ebonyi State Attorney-General, the Ebonyi Commissioner of Police and Habila’s father, seeking an independent forensic autopsy, a fresh police investigation and ₦20 billion in damages over Habila’s death at Umahi’s country home in Uburu, Ebonyi State, on or about June 27.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Abuja police took over the investigation from Ebonyi State Police, with Habila’s body reportedly moved to the National Hospital, Abuja, on Friday after her father’s lawyer consented to an autopsy on condition that the case be transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
