Police Force debunks ‘shoot anyone with illegal guns’ claim

The Nigeria Police Force says IGP Olatunji Disu’s remarks at a Benue security meeting were misconstrued and that no order was given to shoot anyone found with illegal firearms.

Police Deny ‘Shoot-on-Sight’ Order by IGP

The Nigeria Police Force has denied reports that IGP Olatunji Disu ordered officers to shoot anyone caught with illegal firearms. Force spokesman CSP Ani Iniedu said the claim, which went viral after a Friday stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, misrepresented Disu’s actual comments, according to Politics Nigeria.

Iniedu explained that Disu’s address focused on reminding officers that only authorised personnel may carry firearms, and that use of force remains governed by Force Order 237. Disu had earlier warned that illegal weapons would “not be tolerated” and said officers know when to act without waiting for superior orders.
