Ooni denies conferring chieftaincy title on Baba Ijesha

The Ooni of Ife has denied conferring any chieftaincy title on Nollywood actor Baba Ijesha, clarifying that a remark made during a palace visit was misrepresented on social media.

It was simply a light-comedy remark

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has denied conferring a chieftaincy title on Nollywood comedian Baba Ijesha, saying the widely circulated claim misrepresented a light-hearted remark made during a palace visit, Daily Post reports.

In a statement by palace spokesperson Moses Olafare, the Ooni said he received the actor and his wife on Wednesday to celebrate the birth of their son and presented them with a brand-new car and cash gifts as a show of fatherly love, but no title was conferred.

“Awada Konge Oduwa,” which Baba Ijesha described as a chieftaincy title on social media, was simply a comedy remark made in recognition of the actor’s career. “The conferment of chieftaincy titles in Ile-Ife remains a sacred traditional process governed by established customs, consultations and traditional rites,” the Ooni said, adding that none of those procedures took place during the visit. He noted, however, that Baba Ijesha could be considered for a title in the future.
