Nigeria discovers major deposits of platinum, gold, nickel and other strategic minerals in Kaduna State, in what officials are calling a world-class polymetallic mineral province.
Nigeria’s mining sector just got a massive shot in the arm. The Federal Government has announced the discovery of substantial deposits of platinum, gold, nickel, copper, lithium and rare earth elements in Kaduna State a find that could reshape the country’s economic outlook.
Solid Minerals Minister Dr. Dele Alake broke the news at the 5th African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS 2026) in Abuja, saying recent exploration activities verified by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency uncovered the deposits, which he described as carrying “exceptionally high grades.”
Vanguard News reports that Alake said the discovery positions Nigeria as a serious destination for critical minerals powering modern technology and clean energy transitions, while opening fresh doors for investors beyond the country’s traditional oil dependency.
The minister also pushed African nations to prioritise local processing and value addition, urging summit stakeholders to convert conversations into concrete investments capable of generating jobs and driving sustainable economic growth.
