Log off or get fired: IGP bans police officers from unauthorised social media

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has banned all Nigeria Police Force personnel from unauthorised social media activity — including TikTok skits, Instagram posts and monetised content creation — threatening violators with dismissal, demotion, salary forfeiture and prosecution.

Nigeria’s police officers better think twice before hitting that “Go Live” button.

In a sweeping directive dated June 22, 2026, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has slammed the brakes on officers moonlighting as social media content creators — and the consequences for ignoring the order are career-ending.

According to the internal circular obtained by Nigerian media, the ban covers TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and beyond — specifically targeting officers posting skits, photographs, live streams or any content in uniform or within police facilities without written approval.

Sponsorship deals? Gone. Anonymous entertainment accounts exploiting a police identity? Shut them down. Public commentary on operations, investigations, promotions or disciplinary matters? Absolutely forbidden.

Officers already running such accounts have exactly 14 days to deactivate or scrub all police references — no negotiations.

The enforcement muscle behind this directive is real. The Force Intelligence Bureau and the X-Squad Professional Standards Unit have been deployed to actively monitor social media for violators. Even senior officers aren’t safe — the IGP introduced vicarious liability, meaning Commissioners of Police and DPOs who fail to detect violations within their commands also face discipline.

Commands nationwide must issue internal directives within seven days, collect signed acknowledgement forms from all personnel, and submit compliance reports within 14 days.

Sanctions range from interdiction and salary forfeiture to demotion, dismissal and potential prosecution.

Nigeria’s police force has spoken — the only uniform acceptable online is professionalism.
