‘Convert or die’:Armed Lakurawa terrorists preach extremism openly in Niger communities

Dozens of heavily armed Lakurawa terrorists brazenly rode into four Niger State communities on Sunday, preaching extremist ideology and threatening deadly reprisals against any community that refused to submit — all for over two hours without a single security response.

They came armed, they came loud, and nobody stopped them.

On Sunday afternoon, dozens of Lakurawa terrorists descended on four communities — Zugurma, Kulho, Soba and Adogon Malam — in Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, riding motorcycles and carrying sophisticated weapons as casually as market traders carry goods. According to SaharaReporters, they arrived around 4 p.m. and spent more than two hours moving freely from village to village, completely unchallenged.

Their mission? Preach. Threaten. Recruit.

The terrorists made straight for community leaders and traditional figures, delivering hardline sermons and issuing an unmistakable ultimatum.

“They gathered some community leaders and warned them to accept their ideology. They said any community that refuses to cooperate would be attacked,” a resident told SaharaReporters.

And they weren’t shy about it. These weren’t shadowy figures slipping through back roads — they walked into crowded marketplaces, weapons on full display, drawing crowds that reportedly gathered around them in stunned fascination.

“They were carrying guns openly and moving freely in public places. They even went to markets where people were seeing them. Some residents were hailing them as if they were celebrities because nobody challenged them,” another source revealed.

That last part is perhaps the most alarming detail of all — not just the brazen display of arms, but the complete, bewildering absence of any security response despite residents repeatedly alerting authorities.

“The terrorists came in large numbers on motorcycles. They were heavily armed and moved confidently from one village to another,” one resident recounted to SaharaReporters.

Two hours. Four communities. Thousands of witnesses. Zero intervention.

Lakurawa — already notorious for deadly raids across Nigeria’s northwest — appears to be shifting tactics, swapping ambushes for open-air propaganda tours. And if Sunday is anything to go by, they’re doing it with stunning impunity.

The question rattling residents tonight isn’t just when security forces will respond — it’s whether they’ll bother at all.
