Aguiyi-Ironsi’s Family Demands Apology, Compensation 58 Years After Killing
The family’s head, Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi, made the demand during an interview with Arise News on Thursday, describing his uncle as a “detribalized” and visionary leader wrongly punished for a coup he had no role in.
He noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi’s six-month tenure ended violently, insisting his death stemmed only from his seniority as a military officer, not any wrongdoing.
Aguiyi-Ironsi served as Head of State from January to July 1966, after surviving the January coup and helping crush the mutiny. His centralisation of power under Decree 34 and failure to prosecute plotters fuelled resentment among northern officers, leading to his killing on July 29, 1966, alongside Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi.
