NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has agreed with RCCG General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s assessment that President Tinubu has tried his best on security, but argued that the President’s best is no longer sufficient for Nigeria’s needs, saying Tinubu “is tired” and needs to “go home and rest.”
Peter Obi just turned a compliment into a verdict.
In a political move as deft as it was pointed, the NDC presidential candidate agreed with one of Nigeria’s most respected religious leaders — then immediately used that agreement to argue the case for Tinubu’s exit.
Speaking during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, Obi responded to RCCG General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s recent remarks that President Tinubu had tried his best in tackling the country’s security challenges. Rather than contradict the revered cleric, Obi embraced the assessment — and reframed it entirely.
“Pastor Adeboye remains a very revered, respected religious father, whom I believe in his genuineness and goodness. And what he said was correct. He said he has tried his best. He’s trying his best. That’s it. It’s the correct answer,” Obi said.
Then came the pivot.
“The question to ask is: Is his best good enough? Where we find ourselves today, that leads to the issue of capacity,” he said, arguing that effective leadership demanded more than effort — it required competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character.
The conclusion Obi drew from his own framework was unsparing: “President Tinubu is tired. He needs to go home and rest.”
Daily Trust reports that the remarks came during a broader conversation in which Obi was asked why Nigerians should back his presidential ambition over other opposition candidates. His answer was characteristically measured — pointing to his record in public office and the policy ideas he was putting forward, rather than mounting a direct personal attack.
“It’s for you to look at my past and look at what I’m saying now,” he said.
Adeboye’s original comments on Tinubu’s security efforts have continued to generate wide reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape since they were made, with Obi’s response now adding a significant new dimension to the ongoing debate.
