Weeks to Retirement: Police officer shot dead during rival thug clash in Kano

A police officer attached to the Hotoro Division, Sani S.O., was shot and killed with a dane gun by rival thugs in Kano while trying to disperse a violent clash just weeks before his retirement.

A police officer attached to the Hotoro Division in Kano State, identified as Sani S.O., has been killed during a violent confrontation between rival gangs of thugs, just months before his scheduled retirement. A source close to the deceased told Daily Trust that the veteran officer was deployed alongside his colleagues to disperse the fighting groups when the situation turned fatal. He was allegedly shot by one of the thugs using a locally fabricated dane gun. The tragic incident highlights a worrisome security trend as Kano witnesses a sharp resurgence of thuggery-related clashes across several municipal areas, including Fagge, Abattoir Market, Koki, Kurnar Asabe, Hotoro, and Gyadi-Gyadi, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The late officer, who had dedicated over three decades to the service, was described by community members as a highly respected figure within his immediate environment. Recounting the tragic moments that led to the officer’s death, an anonymous source said: “He was working at the Hotoro Division and was deployed with others to disperse the thugs. Unknown to him, some of them had a dane gun, which they used to shoot him. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.” The source further lamented the timing of the killing, noting: “He was a good person who contributed immensely to society, especially within his immediate environment. He was just a few weeks away from retirement before he was killed.”

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Kano State Police Command regarding the fatal shooting and potential arrests were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. The state police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, did not respond to multiple phone calls and text messages seeking clarification on the incident. Meanwhile, the growing wave of street violence has sparked deep concern among Kano residents, who are urgently calling on law enforcement agencies to deploy stricter security measures to clamp down on political and criminal thuggery before it escalates further.
