We shot down U.S. refueling plane, killed all crew members — Iran dismisses Pentagon’s denial

The 2026 Middle East war has entered a perilous new phase as Iran claims to have shot down a U.S. Stratotanker and disabled the USS Abraham Lincoln, contradicting U.S. assertions that a mid-air tanker collision in Iraq was accidental.

Tensions in the Middle East reached a breaking point on Friday, March 13, 2026, as conflicting reports emerged regarding the loss of a United States Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker in western Iraq. The incident follows the massive February 28 joint U.S.-Israeli strikes that assassinated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials in Tehran. While U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the loss of the aircraft during “Operation Epic Fury,” they maintained the crash was a non-hostile incident, possibly involving a mid-air collision with a second tanker that landed safely in Israel with significant tail damage. However, a spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters sharply contradicted this, claiming the aircraft was successfully targeted and shot down by “resistance factions” using advanced air defense systems.

The human toll of the crash remains a subject of intense dispute between the two warring powers. CENTCOM officials confirmed early Friday that at least four U.S. service members perished in the crash near Turaibil, along the Iraqi-Jordanian border, while search and rescue efforts continue for two others. In a more grim assessment, Tehran’s public broadcaster reported that all crew members, “reportedly including three American pilots,” perished in the strike. Iran further alleged that the second U.S. aircraft involved in the mission sustained heavy damage and was forced to make an emergency landing in Tel Aviv, Israel—a claim partially supported by flight tracking data showing a Stratotanker declaring an in-flight emergency before landing at Ben Gurion Airport on Thursday evening.

Adding to the regional chaos, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed a significant naval victory, asserting that a coordinated missile and drone attack had struck the USS Abraham Lincoln. According to Iranian state media, the nuclear-powered carrier sustained “heavy damage” and has been rendered “non-operational,” forcing the strike group to retreat from the Persian Gulf at high speed. “The IRGC stated that the vessel has since retreated from the Persian Gulf, described by Iranian state media as ‘fleeing’ back toward U.S. waters,” though the Pentagon has dismissed these claims, insisting the carrier continues to support offensive operations. As the conflict broadens into a multi-front war, both sides remain locked in a high-stakes information battle over the true extent of military losses in the 13-day-old campaign.
