Top 10 countries with the most asylum approvals in Canada in 2025

Canada approved over 50,000 asylum claims in 2025, led by Haiti, while rising applications and enforcement measures continue to strain the country’s immigration system.

Canada recorded over 107,000 asylum claims in 2025, according to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, highlighting rising demand and a growing backlog.

Between January and December, 107,802 cases were referred, with 50,067 accepted and 14,619 rejected. A total of 79,462 cases were finalised, while thousands remain pending across multiple countries.

  • Türkiye – 4,057 approvals; 227 rejected; 4,106 pending.
  • Nigeria – 3,463 approvals; 1,377 rejected; 21,573 pending.
  • Iran – 3,456 approvals; 11,448 pending.
  • Mexico – 3,012 approvals; 1,836 rejected; 24,059 pending.
  • Pakistan – 2,763 approvals; 462 rejected; 8,727 pending.
  • Colombia – 2,264 approvals; 574 rejected; 8,704 pending.
  • Uganda – 2,089 approvals; 206 rejected; 2,665 pending.
  • India – 2,040 approvals; 2,309 rejected; 45,687 pending.
  • China – 1,811 approvals; 141 rejected; 7,224 pending.

Rejection data shows India recorded the highest rejections, followed by Mexico and Nigeria. Haiti and Bangladesh also posted significant rejection figures, underscoring varying success rates among applicants.

According to the Canada Border Services Agency, 974 Nigerians face deportation, with about 83% linked to failed asylum claims. Canada now deports nearly 400 foreign nationals weekly, its fastest pace in over a decade.
