Nigeria Losing Coastal Communities to Atlantic Ocean — Activist

Environmental activist Nnimo Bassey has raised the alarm over Nigeria’s coastal communities, warning that some have lost significant land to the Atlantic Ocean due to rising sea levels and erosion, Daily Post reports.

Speaking at a West African Climate Justice Movement event themed “Building Solidarity for Climate Justice,” Bassey, director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, said fragmented regional efforts weaken responses to climate change.

He criticised carbon offset schemes and geoengineering as “false solutions” that let polluting nations shift the burden to developing countries, citing forest concession deals in Nigeria allegedly handed to foreign firms for carbon credits. Professor Youba Sokona also called for a united regional response.
