Former presidential aide Lauretta Onochie has condemned the continued detention of ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as political coercion and a threat to Nigerian democracy.
According to Naija News, former media aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has called for the immediate release of former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing his prolonged detention as a weaponisation of state power against opposition figures.
Onochie, now an ADC chieftain, raised fresh alarm over reports that El-Rufai’s freedom had been tied to political conditions, including returning to the APC or abandoning politics entirely.
“That is not justice. That is coercion. That is political intimidation dressed up as due process,” she wrote on X.
She further warned that Nigeria’s democratic foundations were under threat.
“A democracy that jails opposition voices today may have no opposition left tomorrow. A nation without opposition is a nation under dictatorship,” she added.
Onochie urged that any credible case against El-Rufai be heard openly and speedily before a competent court.
