The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg confirmed two Nigerians were killed by South African security personnel amid xenophobic tensions, with the consulate demanding transparent investigations and justice for the victims’ families.
The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg has confirmed the deaths of two Nigerians, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, amid rising xenophobic tensions in South Africa. Consul-General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche said Emmanuel died from injuries allegedly sustained after being beaten by South African National Defence Force personnel on April 20, while Andrew’s body was discovered at the Pretoria Central Mortuary after his apprehension on April 19.
The consulate has opened a formal case with the South African Police Service and called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to conduct a thorough investigation. “We call on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Okey-Uche said, adding that “no one should take the law into their own hands.” She also warned against the dangerous trend of profiling Nigerians as criminals and urged the Nigerian community in South Africa to remain calm.
