Real reason we don’t want autopsy – Mary Habila’s father

The father of Mary Habila, the nurse who died at Minister David Umahi’s Ebonyi residence, has gone on camera to reject autopsy calls and drop all suspicion of foul play, saying his only demand is the immediate release of his daughter’s remains for burial after nearly three weeks of painful waiting.

A grieving father has had enough — and his message could not be simpler.

Habila Wisdom, father of Mary Habila, the 26-year-old nurse who died on June 27 at the Ebonyi residence of Works Minister David Umahi, has appeared on Trust TV News to personally reject calls for an autopsy and demand the immediate release of his daughter’s remains for burial.

Speaking with visible emotion, the father distanced his family entirely from the swirling public controversy and allegations that have consumed the case since SaharaReporters first broke the story on July 11.

“We don’t keep the death of a little child up to so long, just like this. That is why I am here to say once again and for all, I need the corpse of my daughter to take her for burial. That is what I am standing on,” he said.

PM News reports that Wisdom was equally clear that his family harbours no suspicion against anyone. “I am not suspecting anybody because death can occur. Even as we are standing here, one can fall here now and die. So we are not suspecting anybody. It has happened, it has happened,” he said.

He described his daughter’s relationship with the minister’s household as cordial, and said the prolonged delay in releasing her remains had become unbearable for the family.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has maintained that an autopsy is indispensable to determining the cause of death, a position the family has challenged at the Ebonyi State High Court. Habila’s planned burial has been postponed indefinitely amid the standoff.

Minister Umahi has denied any foul play, describing the deceased as “like a daughter” who had worked with him for approximately three years and whose medical treatment he had previously supported.
