Police reject ₦500m bribe, bust ₦7.8bn illicit drug cartel in Lagos

A combined team of the Nigeria Police Force has dismantled a major drug trafficking ring in the Maryland area of Lagos, arresting the suspected kingpin and recovering ₦7.8 billion worth of Canadian Loud after rejecting a ₦500 million bribe.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force over the weekend raided a residential building in the Maryland area of Lagos State, recovering a massive cache of illicit drugs valued at an estimated ₦7.8 billion. The high-stakes sting operation was executed by a combined tactical team comprising officers from the Zone 2 Police Command and the Special Protection Unit (SPU), acting on the direct counter-narcotics directive of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu. The targeted raid culminated in the seizure of hundreds of bags of a highly potent, imported cannabis strain popularly known as “Canadian Loud” and led to the arrest of several suspects, including the alleged mastermind behind the multi-billion naira syndicate, identified as Eke Ifeanyi Henry.

The breakthrough followed an extensive, multi-month intelligence-gathering operation spearheaded by the SPU team in close collaboration with the Zone 2 Headquarters, which allowed operatives to map out the cartel’s metropolitan distribution node. Addressing newsmen on Saturday, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Olohundare Jimoh, stated that the principal suspect had been placed under strict surveillance for several months before law enforcement moved in to neutralize the storage facility on May 19. The tactical discipline of the invading team completely cut off the suspects’ exit routes, preventing the massive shipment of narcotics from being released into the domestic black market.

The integrity of the current policing strategy was put to the test during the raid when the cornered kingpin attempted to buy his freedom and protect his inventory by offering an unprecedented cash bribe. According to police authorities, Henry desperately offered a staggering ₦500 million to the operational commander on the ground, a gesture that was flatly rejected, documented, and added to the criminal charges compiled for prosecution. Reaffirming the force’s commitment to transparency and institutional discipline, AIG Jimoh revealed that during the operation, the suspect allegedly offered a ₦500 million bribe to the SPU commander in an attempt to make the team stand down and allow him to contact his associates to move the consignment elsewhere.
