A Caledon woman faces criminal charges after Canadian border agents intercepted a large shipment from Nigeria containing seven fraudulent passports hidden inside sandals.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has charged Nnenna Oketa, a 44-year-old resident of Caledon, Ontario, after Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered seven fraudulent passports concealed inside a 1,600-kilogram shipment from Nigeria at Toronto Pearson International Airport. During a secondary inspection, officers found five forged Gambian passports and two South African passports hidden inside sandals, all featuring the same male photograph but carrying inconsistent biographical details.
Following the seizure, the case was referred to the RCMP’s Toronto Airport Detachment Border Integrity Unit, which charged Oketa under section 57(3) of the Criminal Code for knowingly possessing forged passports. Inspector John McMath noted that “this investigation underscores the critical role of inter‑agency cooperation in safeguarding Canada’s borders,” while CBSA Regional Director General Lisa Janes emphasized that the agency remains “committed to bringing to justice those who attempt to exploit our border.”
