Governor Makinde’s intervention calmed a major political crisis in Oyo State sparked by impeachment allegations, bribery claims, and tensions involving the Assembly and traditional leadership.
Oyo State faced a political crisis last week as impeachment plots, alleged N1bn inducements, and internal rivalry unsettled the House of Assembly. Lawmakers were divided during a PDP caucus meeting, with tensions exposing cracks within the ruling party. The dispute centred on Governor Seyi Makinde, Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, and claims of a coordinated power struggle.
Allegations of a plot to impeach Makinde triggered concern, though denials followed swiftly. Florence Ajimobi said, “At no time did Ambassador Ajimobi convene, attend, or participate in any such meeting, these allegations are entirely false.” Ogundoyin added, “I was offered monetary inducement, but I declined without hesitation because no amount of money can buy my conscience.”
Makinde intervened, meeting lawmakers and restoring order, with sources saying unity had returned. Meanwhile, Ayo Fayose alleged a plan to remove the Olubadan, declaring, “the current Governor of Oyo State has an agenda to remove the Olubadan.” The monarch dismissed tensions, saying, “Most of what we hear is hearsay,” while expressing optimism for peaceful resolution.
