IPOB explains low army recruitment among Igbo youths

Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, says low Army enlistment among South-East youths reflects deep distrust of the military rather than a lack of courage.

According to Punch, Ejimakor made the claim in a post on X on Thursday, responding to comments from Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who had lamented low South-East turnout at a recruits’ passing-out parade in Ebonyi State. Ejimakor cited alleged marginalisation of Igbos in security leadership and pointed to past incidents, including 1967 killings and more recent cases in Nkpor, Aba, Obigbo, and Port Harcourt, as reasons for the mistrust. He also referenced discomfort with serving alongside former Boko Haram fighters. The Army has attributed low enlistment partly to misinformation, insisting the process is merit-based.
