US lawmakers moves to withhold all US aid to Nigeria over failure to protect citizens

The US House of Representatives has adopted an amendment to withhold 100% of certain US assistance to Nigeria until the government demonstrates effective steps to curb violence and protect its citizens.

US House Moves to Withhold All Aid to Nigeria Over Security Failures

According to Daily Post Nigeria, the amendment, sponsored by Florida Representative Gregory Steube, passed by voice vote on Wednesday, raising the withholding threshold from an earlier proposed 50%. The funds remain conditional on the US Secretary of State certifying that Nigeria has taken effective steps to prevent violence and hold perpetrators accountable. Steube argued that religious minorities, particularly Christians, have faced sustained violence, and questioned continued US funding amid the country’s rising national debt, which he said is nearing $40 trillion.
