The identities of nine residents killed during a suspected terrorist attack on Edikwu Ankpali in Benue State have been released, revealing a devastating toll on families following the loss of several primary providers.
A suspected terrorist attack on the Edikwu Ankpali community in the Apa Local Government Area of Benue State has claimed the lives of nine residents, primarily fathers and primary providers. The victims were brutally killed on Sunday night, marking another escalation in the persistent wave of violence affecting the region. Community sources, who shared harrowing footage of the burial grounds, emphasized that the deceased were well-known members of the locality with deep family ties and responsibilities. This tragedy follows closely on the heels of a separate assault just days earlier in the Mbatsaida community, where 11 people were reported killed.
The released identities highlight a significant generational loss, featuring victims ranging from young fathers to elderly patriarchs. Among those killed were 78-year-old Adah Aboje, who was remembered for raising 35 children, and 62-year-old Oigene Ogah, a household head responsible for 15 children. Younger victims included 29-year-old Gideon Monday, described as his parents’ only son and hope for continuity, and 31-year-old Elaigwu Pelu, a father of four. Other slain residents included Peter Omafu (59), John Peter Musa (33), Ogagwu John (31), Eluma Ogbeni (30), and John Elegbo (39), leaving behind numerous orphans and widows facing an uncertain future.
Local residents have called for global attention to the crisis, insisting that the victims be recognized as more than mere statistics in Nigeria’s security reports. One community member, reflecting on the profound impact of the loss, stressed that the absence of these leaders would be felt for generations. A source lamented the grim reality of the current farming season, stating: “This isn’t farming but burial. Before we move on like people of zero empathy, these are the details that must be put out for the world to see.” Another resident added, “The world needs to understand that these are not just numbers. These are fathers, sons, and leaders whose absence will be felt for generations.”
