A new report reveals Boko Haram fighters are using AI chatbots to design bombs, upgrade weapons, and improve battlefield tactics against Nigerian security forces.
Boko Haram Using AI to Build Bombs, Study Finds
Trial-and-error can get you killed — AI, apparently, doesn’t. According to Punch, in Cambridge researcher Antonia Juelich’s study, Boko Haram fighters used AI chatbots to solve battlefield problems, from modifying motorcycles to jump defensive trenches to designing more destructive explosives.
Former commanders described asking chatbots detailed bomb-making questions and receiving step-by-step guidance. One insurgent said AI helped them adjust chemical mixtures for bigger blasts.
Fighters reportedly used multiple platforms, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and DeepSeek, often disguising requests as legitimate projects to bypass safety restrictions. OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic said their tools have safeguards against misuse and continue strengthening them.
