Ebola outbreak: US doctor infected in Congo flown to Germany for treatment

An American doctor who contracted Ebola while working with a medical missionary group in eastern Congo has been transferred to Germany for treatment, as WHO warns of over 500 suspected cases and growing fears of wider spread.

An American doctor has tested positive for Ebola while working with a medical missionary group in eastern Congo and has been transferred to Germany for medical care.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus disclosed this at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, warning that the situation remained worrying, saying, “There are several factors that make us concerned about the potential for further spread and further deaths. First, beyond the confirmed cases, there are more than 500 suspected cases and 130 suspected deaths.”

Ghebreyesus said the outbreak was caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccines or treatments currently exist, adding that cases had been detected in Kampala and Goma, raising cross-border transmission fears.

WHO has approved $3.9 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies to support response operations.
