AGF asks court to compel INEC to deregister ADC, four other parties

Nigeria’s Attorney General has filed a court action seeking to compel INEC to deregister five political parties, including the ADC and Accord, for failing to meet constitutional performance thresholds.

Nigeria’s Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi, has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to compel INEC to deregister five political parties — the ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord, and Zenith Labour Party.

The suit argues that the parties failed to meet benchmarks under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution, including securing 25 per cent of votes in a presidential election or winning elective seats at any government level.

Court filings state that “the right to associate as a political party is not absolute and must be exercised within constitutional limits,” and that retaining the parties is “unconstitutional, illegal and a violation” of the legal framework.

Opposition parties have accused the Tinubu administration of using such moves to suppress political dissent.
