Ireland-based Nigerian jailed for killing grandmother during psychotic episode

An Irish court jailed Nigeria-born Brian Ogbo for killing his grandmother during a psychotic episode while criticising failures in the country’s mental health system.

A 39-year-old Ireland-based Nigerian, Brian Ogbo, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for killing his 82-year-old grandmother, Stella Nnadi, during what an Irish court described as a severe psychotic episode.

Ogbo had pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the February 23, 2025 incident at the family home in Carrigaline, County Cork. The court heard he moved to Ireland from Nigeria in December 2024 to reunite with his mother and grandmother.

Judge Sinead Behan said Ogbo was “in the obvious throes of a psychotic episode” during the attack. Detectives told the court he had missed anti-psychotic medication while his mother struggled to access mental health services for him.

A postmortem found Nnadi died from blunt force trauma after being forced down stairs. The judge condemned “unforgivable failures” in psychiatric care, saying the tragedy “arguably could have been prevented.”
