2027: PDP to screen Jonathan as lone aspirant

The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to screen a lone presidential aspirant, believed to be former President Goodluck Jonathan, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN, will on Tuesday screen a lone presidential aspirant believed to be former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections. The high-stakes screening is part of a broader, nationwide exercise involving more than 3,000 aspirants seeking various elective offices across the country on the platform of the party. Although the official PDP statement referred strictly to “one presidential aspirant,” subsequent inquiries by THISDAY revealed the identity of the sole aspirant to be the former Nigerian president.

A high-powered screening committee has been assembled to conduct the exercise for the presidential aspirant, featuring several prominent party chieftains and elder statesmen. The committee includes former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi. Other notable members designated to the panel are Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Dr. Abdul Bulama, Dr. Esther Uduehi, Edo State PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi, and Dr. Sunday Solarin, while Chief Anicho Okoro will serve as the administrative secretary.

This political development comes just days after the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, disclosed that Jonathan had successfully registered as a PDP member under the party’s fresh digital registration exercise. The registration and subsequent screening signal a significant re-engagement of the former president with the party’s core structure as the political landscape shifts toward the next general elections. Observers view the move as a major stride by the Turaki-led faction to consolidate its positioning and present a formidable front ahead of the 2027 polls.
