Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi revealed that he chose to represent Nigeria over England because the authentic cultural connection and “home” feeling he experienced during his first call-up far outweighed the structured path of the English youth system.
Alex Iwobi recently shared the pivotal motivations behind his decision to represent the Super Eagles over England, recounting on the Beast Mode On podcast how a sense of cultural belonging outweighed a potentially smoother path with the Young Lions. Iwobi, 29, explained that despite playing for England’s youth setups, his progress stalled just as Nigeria invited him to their Olympic squad, prompting former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to ask, “What do you want to do? You can delay it so you can think about England, or you can go and represent Nigeria.”
Despite the “mad” transition to basic facilities where players washed their own kits and ran laps for poor passes, Iwobi was won over by the atmosphere and hospitality, noting, “The food was clearly jollof rice; we had yam and egg for breakfast. I just felt I was at home.” Reflecting on his choice to commit to the senior team during a crucial match against Egypt, Iwobi admitted that while England offers a disciplined system with world-class talent, “Nigeria is always fun. You never know if something will turn out well or not.” Since his 2015 debut, the former Arsenal and Everton star has become a cornerstone of the national team, amassing 98 caps and 10 goals.
