Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai appeared in court under heavy security on Tuesday as the Kaduna State High Court deferred its ruling on his bail application to April 21, 2026.
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai appeared before the Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday to face corruption charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The high-profile hearing was conducted under stringent security measures, with armed personnel establishing a wide perimeter around the court complex. These reinforcements restricted access for journalists and the general public as the former governor arrived in a white Hilux vehicle provided by ICPC operatives.
During the proceedings, the court heard arguments from both legal teams regarding the defendant’s bail application. Counsel for the ICPC opposed the request, asserting that investigations into the alleged offenses remain active and expressing concerns that granting bail at this juncture could potentially compromise the integrity of the process. Consequently, the presiding judge adjourned the ruling on the bail application until April 21, 2026, leaving the former governor in custody pending the court’s decision.
The defense team, led by Ukpong Abang, strongly advocated for the defendant’s release, highlighting his history of compliance with the commission’s directives. Abang argued that his client is not a flight risk and has demonstrated a consistent willingness to face the allegations. Addressing the court, Abang stated: “Our client has complied with all investigative requests and is prepared to abide by any bail conditions the court may impose.”
