Popular clergyman and founder of Power City International, Abel Damina, has dismissed the doctrine of tithing as a pathway to wealth, declaring that there is no scripture in the Bible that guarantees riches in exchange for giving to God.
In a video shared on X by user #ChuksEricE on Monday, Damina criticised what he described as a dangerous and unscriptural mindset cultivated in Nigerian churches, where worshippers are made to believe financial prosperity is tied to how much they give to religious leaders and institutions. To illustrate his point, he recounted the story of a man who donated all three of his cars to his church in expectation of divine reward but was left with nothing. โSomebody told me he gave to his church all his three cars and he has been trekking since then till when I met him. He said, I was thinking of going back to collect one. I said, I think so too. Because if you gave three and the only one you want to collect is one out of the three, you try. Youโre never asking for the three,โ Damina said.
The cleric, known for his unorthodox theological views, insisted that wealth is a product of education, labour and enterprise rather than religious offerings. He maintained that the belief that tithing produces billionaires lacks both scriptural and empirical backing. โThereโs no scripture in the Bible that says when you give to God, youโll be a rich person. Thereโs no such scripture. Nobody prospers by giving. When you give, you lack. Because when you give, it leaves you and thereโs vacuum. Then you have to work again and give it time to recover what you gave. And sometimes you never recover it,โ he said.
