Court Dismisses N5bn Copyright Suit, Confirms Sinach as Sole Owner of ‘Way Maker’

Sinach wins big in court. Per Daily Post Nigeria, Justice A. Lewis-Allagoa dismissed music producer Michael Oluwole’s claim to co-authorship of the globally celebrated song, ruling he failed to prove co-ownership.

Oluwole had sought legal recognition as co-author, a share of revenues, and N5 billion in damages, alleging infringement of his performer’s rights. But the court found his role was limited to mixing and mastering an already existing work, noting Sinach had performed the song internationally before its studio production.

The judge stressed that technical contributors don’t automatically become authors unless they add original creative content, affirming Sinach’s exclusive rights over the song’s reproduction, distribution and licensing.
