The FCT Police Command has arrested four officers for illegally extorting N53,000 from ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Aliyu during an unauthorised checkpoint stop in Abuja.
Cops Arrested For Extorting ICPC Boss
Four policemen picked the wrong target — and it’s cost them their freedom.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, told journalists on Monday that the officers, whom he branded “thieves” unfit to wear the uniform, mounted an illegal checkpoint in Wuse’s Banex area and extorted ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Aliyu (SAN), unaware of his identity, according to Punch.
Sanusi said the ICPC boss was forced to withdraw N53,000 via a POS operator, even covering the transaction charges, before the officers shared the cash among themselves.
Investigations revealed the officers had abandoned their duty posts to form a gang and mount the illegal checkpoint. The command declared them wanted before their gang leader was arrested; his confession led to the rest being nabbed.
Sanusi vowed severe punishment, including possible dismissal, and reiterated the IG’s ban on indiscriminate phone searches, urging residents to refuse such demands and report incidents via police emergency lines.
