Rescue operations were under way Monday after a boat capsized in northwestern Nigeria’s Jigawa state, with authorities fearing dozens dead. Police spokesman Shi’isu Adam said up to 40 people drowned when the boat was crossing the river Sunday. One body was recovered that day, with five more found early Monday, according to MacauBusiness.com.

Emergency responders, however, gave a lower toll, confirming five deaths, with up to 20 still missing and 15 passengers rescued. The boat was believed to be carrying about 40 people in total.

“The search and rescue is still ongoing,” said Nura Abdullahi.
