No Court Warrant, No Phone Search, CP Tells Officers

The Plateau Police Command has drawn a firm line: hands off citizens’ phones — unless there’s a warrant.

Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah delivered the warning while addressing operatives in Jos, according to a statement released Thursday by command spokesman Alfred Alabo, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

“No personnel of this command has the legal authority to search the mobile phone of any citizen on the road without a court warrant,” Mr Ewah said.

The commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism and cautioned officers against any unprofessional conduct on the job.

He further advised residents to politely refuse any unlawful attempt by personnel to search their phones and to report such incidents at the nearest police station.

Mr Alabo also shared phone numbers for residents to report harassment: 08034448617, 08060545670, 08037681026, 09016146804, and 09051145757.
