Aliko Dangote has chosen Lamu, Kenya, as the site for his proposed 700,000-bpd East African refinery, ending months of speculation over the project’s location.

DANGOTE PICKS KENYA FOR EAST AFRICAN MEGA REFINERY

Aliko Dangote’s proposed 700,000-bpd East African refinery will be built in Lamu, Kenya, a senior company official confirmed Tuesday, Channels Television reports.

Edwin Devakumar, vice president for oil and gas at Dangote Industries Limited, said the facility would take about 30 months to build. Tanzania had also been considered, and Dangote visited President Samia Suluhu Hassan late last month to explain the “commercial and technical considerations” behind choosing Lamu, inviting Tanzania to participate in the investment. He had earlier signalled a preference for Mombasa before settling on Lamu.

Dangote’s 650,000-bpd Nigerian refinery, Africa’s largest, came online in 2024, with plans to expand capacity to 1.4 million bpd by 2028 and list on the Nigerian Stock Exchange next year.
