Nigerian Trader Dies in Abidjan Jail After Months of Detention Without Trial
Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu on Friday summoned Ivorian Ambassador Kalilou Traore over the death of Usama Murtala, one of six young Nigerian traders from Sokoto State who were arrested and detained without trial at MACA Prison, Abidjan, following a trading trip in August 2025, Daily Post reports.
Ojukwu called for compensation for the deceased’s family and disclosed that two surviving victims were critically ill due to malnutrition, having been fed only once daily. The four other survivors were recently released following diplomatic interventions by the Nigerian Mission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and have since reunited with their families.
