President Bola Tinubu has reportedly rejected senators’ request for automatic return tickets, emphasising governors’ authority over candidate selection after a closed-door meeting in Abuja.
Bola Tinubu has reportedly rejected a lobbying effort by senators seeking automatic return tickets ahead of the next general elections, insisting that state governors should retain decisive influence over candidate selection.
The president conveyed this position during a meeting with the extended leadership of the Senate at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. The delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, met with Tinubu shortly after plenary, following what lawmakers described as an “emergency and strategic” engagement prompted by a closed-door executive session. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the meeting in a post on X but did not disclose details of the discussions.
A communication attributed to the Senate leadership and shared by Onanuga stated that “far-reaching decisions were taken at this strategic meeting, which deliberated on matters of urgent national importance.” Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also echoed the position, noting that the meeting addressed key national issues but offered no specifics. “Far-reaching decisions were taken at this strategic meeting, which deliberated on matters of urgent national importance,” he said.
