N4.2bn for chairs, microphones, N20bn for fence: Inside Lagos Govt’s jaw-dropping 2026 budget

A SaharaReporters review of Lagos State’s 2026 budget has revealed that N20 billion has been earmarked for fencing and drainage channels at the House of Assembly’s legislative quarters — exceeding the N16 billion allocated for community-based capital infrastructure across the entire state — while the Deputy Governor’s office separately budgeted N4.2 billion for furniture and thirty microphones.

Lagos has set aside N20 billion to build a fence and drainage channels. For communities across the state, there is N16 billion.

A SaharaReporters review of the Lagos State 2026 budget has uncovered a series of eye-watering allocations that place perimeter infrastructure at the House of Assembly’s legislative quarters above broad-based community development in the state’s capital expenditure priorities.

The budget document describes the allocation as follows: “Construction of new fence and drainage channels at the Permanent Legislative Quarters, covering of gutters — N20,000,000,000.” Between January and March 2026, N500 million had already been spent against this line item.

By comparison, the Lagos State House of Assembly budgeted N16 billion — N4 billion less — for “MDA executed community based Capital Infrastructural Intervention” across the state.

The Assembly also set aside N800 million for the installation of e-Parliament and management software to address internet connectivity and computerisation.

The surprises don’t stop at the legislature. A separate budget review by SaharaReporters shows the Office of the Deputy Governor has earmarked N4.2 billion for the purchase of office furniture and thirty microphones — specifically covering “ten executive tables and chairs, forty visitor chairs, one hundred and twenty officers’ tables and chairs” and “thirty microphones for the delegates conference room.” Between January and September 2025, N97.5 million had already been spent on the procurement, with N4.247 billion approved for 2026.

Elsewhere in the budget, N467 million has been set aside for renovating the main Governor’s residence, while the Lagos State House in Abuja is earmarked for a N5 billion renovation.

The allocations form part of the state’s capital expenditure plans for the 2026 fiscal year as contained in the budget document reviewed by SaharaReporters.

Lagos State Government had not publicly responded to the budget figures at the time of filing this report.
