Police can’t force you to unlock your phone — FCT Commissioner

The FCT Commissioner of Police has told residents to refuse unlawful phone searches by officers, citing an Inspector-General directive against the practice.

FCT CP Backs IG’s Directive: Resist Phone Searches

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, Ahmed Sanusi, has a blunt message for residents: don’t let officers search your phone on the street. Speaking at a press briefing, Sanusi said the practice violates a standing Inspector-General directive introduced after widespread reports of extortion and abuse by security personnel.

He clarified phones can only be searched once a suspect is lawfully arrested and taken to a station — not on mere suspicion of internet fraud. Residents confronted by demanding officers should refuse and call the police emergency line instead. Violators, he warned, face disciplinary action.
