Pilot asks passengers to leave EasyJet plane because aircraft too heavy to fly

Five passengers voluntarily deplaned an EasyJet flight at London Southend Airport after the pilot announced the aircraft was too heavy to take off safely due to weather and runway constraints.

An EasyJet flight from London Southend Airport to Malaga faced an unusual delay on Saturday when the pilot informed passengers that the aircraft was too heavy to safely take off. Flight U2 7008, scheduled for an early morning departure, was impacted by a combination of adverse weather conditions and the relatively short length of Southend’s runway. Crew members explained that the aircraft’s weight exceeded safety limits for the specific runway conditions, presenting travelers with the choice of leaving passengers behind, offloading luggage, or remaining grounded.

Five passengers eventually volunteered to step down from the flight to allow the aircraft to meet safety requirements. An EasyJet spokesperson confirmed that those who deplaned were provided with free transfers to London Gatwick, where they were placed on an alternative flight to Malaga later that day. The airline emphasized that passenger welfare and safety remain their highest priority and noted that the volunteers would be eligible for compensation for the inconvenience.

Onboard witnesses described a mix of tension and eventual relief, with those remaining on the flight reportedly applauding the volunteers as they departed. While the pilot mentioned he had not personally encountered the situation before, frequent flyers noted that weight restrictions are a known factor at Southend due to its infrastructure. The flight eventually departed Essex only slightly behind schedule once the necessary weight reduction was achieved.
