Peter Obi, former Anambra governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has alleged the illegal demolition of his younger brother’s property in Ikeja, Lagos. In a post on X, Obi said the property was destroyed without a court order or demolition permit.
“This morning, my youngest brother called me frantically… a group of people had invaded his company property… and were demolishing the building,” he wrote.
Obi said he flew to Lagos and was denied access by security personnel. He requested legal documents but was shown a court judgment against unnamed individuals, without any demolition order.
“They had nothing,” Obi said. “The contractor said he didn’t know who sent him.”
Describing the incident as “coordinated lawlessness,” Obi recounted a recent conversation with a businessman who avoids investing in Nigeria due to weak legal protections.
“His answer was piercing: ‘Nigeria is a lawless country. Until we have laws that protect people, nobody will invest in Nigeria,’” Obi quoted.
