NHIA: Only 22 million out of 240 million Nigerians enrolled in health insurance

The National Health Insurance Authority says enrolment has climbed to 22.03 million Nigerians, still a fraction of the country’s estimated 240 million population.

Nigeria’s health insurance coverage has crept up to 22.03 million people, representing 35 per cent year-on-year growth, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disclosed. NHIA Director-General Kelechi Ohiri made the disclosure at the Nigerian Association of Insurance and Pension Editors’ Annual General Meeting in Lagos, crediting stronger collaboration with state health agencies, employers and the private sector.

Peoples Gazette reports despite the growth, more than 200 million Nigerians remain without coverage. Ohiri said the country now has the policies and legislation needed to achieve Universal Health Coverage, adding that implementation remains the “decisive variable.” NHIA also disclosed it had resolved thousands of enrollee complaints and refunded over N14.2 million to affected members.
