70 Years On, Niger Delta Demands Its Due
Seventy years after Nigeria’s first crude shipment, the reckoning continues. At Monday’s Sweet Crude Dialogue in Yenagoa, Governor Diri, represented by his deputy Peter Akpe, cited findings that 13 million barrels spilled between 1958 and 2010, calling it “environmental genocide.” Jonathan urged deeper local content development, while keynote speaker Prof. Ibibia Worika said the region has little to show for its sacrifice.
