Fela Kuti becomes first African artist inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has made history as the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, receiving the honor in the Early Influence category for the class of 2026.

In a milestone moment for African music, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has been named the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The 2026 inductees were announced during a special segment on American Idol by judge Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest, following a vote by over 1,200 artists, historians, and industry professionals. Fela is being honored in the “Early Influence” category for his revolutionary fusion of West African musical traditions with American funk and jazz—a sound that has reshaped the global musical landscape. This prestigious recognition comes just months after the late icon was posthumously honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in Los Angeles.

The 2026 class also features Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, who will be inducted in the “Performance” category. Sade joins an elite group of honorees including the Staten Island hip-hop pioneers Wu-Tang Clan, R&B powerhouse Luther Vandross, and legendary drummer-turned-frontman Phil Collins. In the “Early Influence” category, Fela stands alongside other trailblazing figures such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, country rocker Gram Parsons, and the “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz. The diverse list reflects the institution’s commitment to celebrating influential figures across rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B, and soul.

The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. As both a museum and an honorary institution, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame serves to document the history of the most significant creators in popular music. Fela’s inclusion is seen by many as a long-overdue validation of his enduring political and musical legacy. “Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s influence on the global evolution of music is undeniable,” noted industry experts following the reveal, underscoring the late activist’s role in using music as a weapon for social change and cultural identity.
