Defence Headquarters convenes Court Martial for officers over alleged plot to overthrow Tinubu

Defence Headquarters has constituted a General Court Martial to try multiple military personnel accused of plotting a coup against President Bola Tinubu.

Defence Headquarters Nigeria has convened a General Court Martial (GCM) to try several military personnel across the armed forces over an alleged coup plot against Bola Tinubu, in what is being described as one of the most extensive military trials in recent years.

The decision was contained in an official convening order dated April 17, 2026, issued from the Defence Headquarters Garrison at Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja. The order, signed by Major General AM Alechenu, stated that the court martial was constituted under the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, to prosecute the accused officers.

According to the document, the General Court Martial “is to assemble at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja on 23 Apr 26 for the purpose of conducting the trial of the accused persons listed…”, marking the formal commencement of proceedings in the high-profile case.
