The US House of Representatives has adopted an amendment to withhold all US assistance to Nigeria until the government meets specific conditions on tackling violence against Christians.
US House Votes To Withhold 100% Of Aid To Nigeria Over Christian Persecution
The amendment, sponsored by Congressman Gregory Steube, was passed by voice vote on Wednesday and added to the fiscal 2027 State Department spending bill, which the House later passed 217-209, Punch reports.
Steube raised the original bill’s threshold from 50 per cent to 100 per cent, while leaving certification conditions requiring the Secretary of State to confirm Nigeria has taken action against violence unchanged.
On the floor, Steube accused Nigeria’s government of failing to address a wave of violence, also citing America’s rising national debt.
The measure still requires Senate approval and presidential signature before taking effect.
