Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is facing growing pressure to drop his 2027 ambition as support builds within the ADC for a Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso joint ticket.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly under pressure to step aside in the 2027 presidential race as supporters of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso push for a joint ticket under the African Democratic Congress, ADC. Party stakeholders are said to be divided over whether Atiku’s experience or Obi’s popularity gives the opposition its best chance.
Some ADC figures have openly urged Atiku to yield to younger candidates. Senator Victor Umeh said Atiku should make way for others, while analyst Jimi Disu said, “Atiku would be a hero if he steps aside, it doesn’t have to be him.” Atiku has insisted no aspirant matches his northern electoral strength.
Meanwhile, supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso say talks are ongoing to form a united front. Kwankwaso ally Habibu Mohammad said, “My principal, Kwankwaso, has agreed to deputize Obi.” Atiku, however, said he would support any consensus candidate, adding: “Yes, I will step aside for any winner.”
